What is PRK?
PRK,
or photorefractive keratectomy, was the first laser vision correction
procedure developed. Offered at our office serving the San Jose
and Mountain View area, PRK surgery is performed using a computer-guided,
cold excimer laser to remove the cornea's top layer of epithelial
cells. The laser is then used to reshape the underlying corneal
surface and improve the patient's vision.
How long does treatment take?
While
the PRK laser treatment is performed within 15 to 60 seconds,
patients should expect to spend about an hour at our Mountain
View center on the day of their PRK treatment.
Following treatment, a bandage contact lens is placed for two to three days while the epithelial cells heal and cover the top corneal surface. Patients should arrange for transportation on the day of the procedure. Normal activities can typically be resumed in one to three days.
What can I expect following the PRK procedure?
Most
patients have moderate discomfort the first evening following
PRK. At our San Jose and Mountain View area center, our PRK patients
tell us that vision usually becomes clear five to seven days
following PRK. Eye drops are typically used for approximately
two months following PRK. Although the visual results are similar
to LASIK at one month, many patients choose LASIK because of
the faster healing time and quicker return to clear vision.
What visual results can I expect following PRK?
After PRK, 99 percent of our patients see 20/40 or better without correction and 90 percent see 20/25 or 20/20. Occasionally PRK patients will actually gain one line of vision.
